When Nilam arrived in the UK, she was full of ambition but unsure how to navigate the job market. Despite her best efforts, she spent nearly a year searching for employment without success. She faced countless roadblocks—uncertainty about required documents, ineffective interviews, and a CV that didn’t showcase her potential. Each rejection made the path forward seem more daunting.

Then, Nilam discovered STEP- Ukraine, a programme designed to support Ukrainian refugees to in accessing meaningful employment opportunities. She was introduced to Mariia Makarova, Central Surrey Voluntary Action’s (CSVA) Employment Advisor, whose presentation about how STEP- Ukraine which convinced Nilam to take the leap.

From the very beginning, Mariia provided Nilam with unwavering support. She not only helped refine Nilam’s CV but also guided her through the entire job search process. With Mariia’s encouragement, Nilam received tailored job opportunities that suited her skills and aspirations. More importantly, she learned how to navigate job applications and prepare for interviews with confidence.

As a result, Nilam secured a job as a dental nurse in a dental clinic—a career she had been striving toward for months. The impact of this opportunity was profound: not only did she gain financial independence, but she also found herself on a clear career path with opportunities for growth. Today, she is advancing in her role, continuously learning, and embracing a brighter future.

Reflecting on her experience, Nilam describes it as “successful and life-changing”. She credits STEP- Ukraine for providing her with the knowledge, support, and confidence to break through employment barriers.
