When Anastasiia Stupak arrived in the UK, she faced a challenge familiar to many refugees: uncertainty about her English skills and employment prospects. With previous experience as a kitchen assistant, she aspired to transition into a different career but didn’t know where to start.
She learned about STEP Ukraine, through social media, and despite initial hesitation, she decided to join the programme in hopes of finding guidance. What she discovered was more than just employment support—it was a transformative experience that built her confidence and gave her the tools to succeed.
Through STEP Ukraine, Anastasiia worked closely with Mariia Makarova, her Employment Advisor, who helped her explore better job opportunities beyond traditional platforms like Indeed. She expanded her job search to LinkedIn, a decision that opened up a wider range of possibilities. More importantly, she enrolled in an intensive English course, completing it with a C1 certification—a crucial step that significantly improved her employability.
With her newfound confidence and qualifications, Anastasiia secured a full-time role as a Retail Assistant at Zara. The position has been a game-changer, providing financial stability, professional development, and improved communication skills. Today, she feels more confident, independent, and capable than ever before.
Reflecting on her journey, Anastasiia acknowledges the profound impact of STEP. What once seemed like an impossible transition became a reality thanks to structured guidance, skill-building, and one-on-one support.
Her story is a testament to the power of tailored employment programs in unlocking potential and breaking down barriers for displaced individuals. STEP can support more individuals like Anastasiia, empowering them to find meaningful employment, build self-sufficiency, and contribute to their communities.
