To increase the variety of habitats on the Common, the Epsom Common Association carries out countryside management tasks, such as clearing scrub and young trees that are encroaching on grassland and heath.  This helps a wider range of plants and animals live on the Common.

On summer evenings we clear bracken, and we also make charcoal.  Most of this work is done by hand and we are always pleased to welcome new volunteers.

What skills do I need?

Anyone who enjoys the outdoors and would like to help make the Common a better place for wildlife and people.

You need to be willing and able to work outside, typically cutting scrub and small trees with loppers and handsaws.  However not all the work is particularly demanding and everyone works at their own pace.  No need to be particularly fit, but you will get some exercise.

Our regular volunteers are men and women of various ages.  No previous experience needed, just the willingness to learn and to observe the necessary safety precautions.  Being outside, it may be cold and wet - but we do pack up if it gets too bad.
