Caterham Oxted & Godstone Lions Club was founded in 1978. We are known as COGs which is very appropriate as we consider ourselves to be a vital component of our community. We are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered with the Charity Commission,
The club currently comprises 30 men and women who are supported by our partners and friends. All these people have a strong desire to put something back into their community and at the same time enjoy friendship, camaraderie, and a very active social life.
The Club’s primary objective is to support deserving needy causes in the Tandridge area. These may be individuals or organisations. As we are part of an international service organisation, we also, from time-to-time support national and international causes. We have regularly contributed to the Lions Clubs International Foundation which supports communities in disaster areas throughout the World. All Lions are volunteers and therefore the organisation does not incur any administrative costs.
The Club carries out a variety of community service activities, providing manpower or funds to support good causes in the Tandridge area. We regularly donate a significant sum to the Caterham Food Bank at Christmas time. We also organise a tea party for the recipients of the local Talking Newspaper. Other causes that the Club have supported recently include the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance, St Catherine’s Hospice, our local cancer care organisation, and St Luke’s Hospital which provides cancer treatment in our area. We also organise, in partnership with Tandridge District Council, the Message in a Bottle scheme which advises people’s medical conditions to the emergency services.
The Club raises the funds to enable it to make grants and donations by organising a wide variety of fund-raising events. Prior to the current pandemic these have included Barn Dances, Quiz Nights and Tribute Band Concerts. We regularly fund-raise at fetes and carnivals, particularly by providing the drinks and food, including hot dogs, burgers, popcorn, and candy floss.
Each year, prior to Christmas we take our Christmas Float with Santa around the streets of Godstone, South Godstone, Bletchingley and Caterham Village. We also have static collections at supermarkets and garden centres. This is a massive undertaking, and we are grateful to the many friends of COGs who support us at this time of year. All Lions are volunteers and give of the time freely according to their ability. The administration of Lions clubs is paid for by the members themselves. It is Lions proud boast that ALL monies raised from the public (less only the essential costs of raising those funds) goes towards deserving causes.
We are vigorously looking for like-minded people to help us to achieve our aims. Come and join us.
Enjoy being part of the community with a sense of humour.
