This is a vital role in Cobham Community Garden to ensure that the Garden does what it says on the tin and produces crops for everyone to enjoy. The role holder should be knowledgeable about growing – principally vegetables and fruit – and enjoy sharing it.

This role could easily be shared by more than one person and essentially involves participating in the following:
• Producing the annual planting plan
• Sourcing materials (seeds, plants, compost, etc.)
• Planning and organising the annual cycle of work
• Participating in the work
• Supervise the other volunteers, who are really keen to participate but often lack the experience or knowledge to be confident in actually committing something to the soil. A few words or quick demonstration is all that’s needed to set them off
• Liaise with Cobham Garden Club

They will also ensure that there is an appropriate stock of maintained gardening equipment.
They will participate in managing the budget of the organisation (in conjunction with the Business lead).
The Garden is managed with minimum synthetic inputs, maximising recycling and operating in the most sustainable way compatible with the conditions and resources available.

We have detailed growing plans for most crops which covers area required/quantities, key dates, sowing, transplanting, planting and aftercare guidance.
This is a highly respected role in an immensely satisfying community project.
You can be experimental and creative with 3 greenhouses and a lot of space!
Our very able, dedicated and enthusiastic committee offer lots of support.

Availability Details

The Garden is open from 10-12 and 2-4 Thursdays and Saturdays if there are enough volunteers to open it. The Head Gardener should ideally be in attendance for one session a week if possible (more if wished) to ensure smooth progression through the season. Some ‘out of hours’ time is needed for planning crop rotation, organising the supply of garden sundries, seeds etc. Hours are flexible provided the role holder provides sufficient support to keep the Garden productive.
