Our Contact Centre provides a safe and neutral venue where children can meet the parent they no longer live with. The Contact Centre is run by a dedicated group of trained volunteers under the auspices of a Coordinator and an Executive Committee - all of whom are volunteers.  All day to day business is delegated to them, including how the Centre actually operates on the 2 Saturdays a month when it is open for families, but the trustees help them whenever necessary.  This involves giving support by making sure they have enough staff and facilities to carry out the task of providing a safe, secure and pleasant environment in which children and parents can meet.  Trustees also support them in interviews with prospective parents - one Trustee always sits in on each interview which is conducted by the Coordinator - and the same with prospective volunteers.  These interviews always take place during the Saturdays when the Centre is open, so a Trustee could expect to be asked to give an hour or two a few times each year.  Because the nature of the volunteers' work can be very stressful at times trustees also try to give emotional support, but only ever when asked for.

What skills do I need?

The current Trustees have experience in the Law and Education, which is quite appropriate, but we would like to recruit people who work or have worked in other fields such as business, industry or public services.  Experience with finance and/or management would be particularly helpful.

We usually meet on 4 or 5 evenings a year, in the Chairman's home (presently in Farnborough) and the meetings begin at 7.00 p.m. and last about 2 hours.  The only other commitment is to attend the A.G.M. which always takes place in the Centre on a Saturday morning in March.

The task is not onerous - we meet about 4 times a year, for a couple of hours in an evening, and we give advice and support to our volunteers when needed. On rare occasions we are asked to attend interviews (on a Saturday afternoon, when the Centre is open) for prospective parents, so we can support/advise the Coordinator who actually conducts the interview.
