Get outdoors on rivers, away from the crowds, helping juniors enjoy river paddling at weekends or during the school holidays.
We are seeking experienced adult canoeists to help deliver a programme of outdoor kayaking over the summer months, typically the Medway, Mole, Thames and Wey or similar.
This is an unusual and superb volunteering opportunity if you are over 18 and have current or lapsed canoeing / kayaking leadership qualifications and would like to share your love of the sport with young people. It's all about getting young people out and about enjoying themselves, having new experiences, building confidence and self-esteem, whilst developing friendships that may last a lifetime.
You would initially be assisting a qualified river Leader and would not be asked to do more than you feel comfortable with. It is not necessarily a coaching role, rather more to do with enjoying being on the water and making it a safe and happy experience for all involved, memorable for all the right reasons.
As car sharing is not yet permissible with Covid-19 in the community, you would need to be able to drive yourself and your equipment to the river.
TCKC is a Junior Club affiliated to British Canoeing and complies with the Governing Body guidelines for operating safely and minimising the Covid risk, as well as Welfare and Safeguarding requirements, meaning that references and DBS checks will be required.
The Club has kayaks and all necessary equipment available for loan if you do not have your own.
Current or lapsed British Canoeing qualifications for sheltered water river leadership.
A love of canoeing and a desire to share your skills with other people.
River trip leader experience. Physically able, competent and confident in a canoe or kayak, such that you could help others from your craft without putting your own safety at risk.
Knowledge of the rules of the river, awareness of risk, ability to spot the dangers, ability to self-rescue following a capsize and assist with rescuing others from a capsize.
