Hosts provide a warm welcome and a simple afternoon tea to a group of lonely older people and their volunteer drivers.

We ask you to host a tea party once or twice a year.

Many older people feel isolated, so a trip to see new people and make friends makes a great difference. Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, a small group of volunteer drivers (3-4) pick up 6-10 older people and together they visit a volunteer host for afternoon tea for a couple of hours.

It is the same drivers and members that get together each month and they go to the home of a different host each month, visiting them year after year. The older people are over 75, live alone and haven't got anyone to share thoughts with, so for them these regular outings are a real lifesaver, and you will have as much fun as them. It is a great opportunity to involve the whole family including pets!

What skills do I need?

Requirements: The only essentials are a big teapot, a downstairs toilet and easy access to your house e.g. not too many steps to your front door).

Your commitment: We ask hosts to commit to one or two tea parties a year - more if they want. The volunteer coordinator will call to check dates and other arrangements and nearer the time will confirm how many guests to expect.

Tea can be as simple or elaborate as you want. Usually hosts offer a selection of sandwiches and cakes accompanied by tea or coffee. The older guests and their drivers arrive at about 3pm and will be ready to leave by 5 - 5:15pm.
