This role exists to engage younger people with the Garden so that they understand where some of their food comes from and learn to enjoy gardening. Our longer term aim is to help younger people to value the natural environment and the production of food to minimise waste and pollution.
The role holder will engage with local youth groups and schools to build relationships, develop activities in the Garden and facilitate visits.
We already have good relationships with local Guides, Scouts, the American Community School, Cobham Free School, the Children’s Centre, Oasis, local DofE groups, Elmbridge play scheme and other local nurseries. These relationships need nurturing, and new ones developing.
Enthusiasm for children and an understanding of what engages them;
Enthusiasm for growing veg and fruit sustainably and the ability to share this with children;
Organisational skills to arrange and deliver high impact visits for children;
Team working skills to work productively with the leaders of visiting organisations.
The time commitment will be flexible to suit the target organisations. Most of the time will probably be spent during the day, as this is the time that the children and leaders are most likely to be available. It is likely that there will be roughly a visit a month over the growing season (March – Oct), but this will vary according to term timings etc. Time will also be necessary for preparation and follow up, plus ongoing maintenance of relationships.
